We can’t quite believe its been a year since we established our new board of directors. Since Lesley, Karen and Jennifer took the reins in line with International Women’s Day in March 2018, it’s been a 12-month whirlwind of new clients, new faces and new successes.
We thought we’d take five minutes to share some of our personal highlights of the past year.
Attending Xerocon: I attended my first XeroCon conference which energised and focused my attention on our own digital accountancy offering and our strategy for change and development in this area. Watch this space as 2019 becomes digitally inspired at Revell Ward!
Raising our profile: One of our key business achievements has been to listen to and act upon the advice and challenges presented to us by our PR consultant, Alex Mason. He has been inspirational in his drive to raise the profile of our business, but we know he can’t do it without us so we try to take on almost every challenge – sometimes a little slowly for his liking! The comments we receive about our presence “just about everywhere” is exciting and a nice return on investment.
Being QADtastic: Getting a clean bill of health on our External Audit Quality Control Review was a great achievment. We’re very proud and professional auditors who are regularly told by many of clients a that “you’re very thorough”, which makes us very happy. Having spent over 25 years auditing owner managed businesses, I still come across new issues every year. We love what we do so it’s great to be told we do it well.
Getting the right team: 2018 was the year we finally cracked it in terms of not only having great people but having the right mix, too. It started back in February with the arrival of Karen Armitage, a manager with a wealth of relevant experience. Karen slotted straight in and continues to make an impact. We also welcomed two new apprentices, Kai and Matthew, who joined us in November and have already proved their value as they’ve forged relationships with several clients and made a fantastic start on their career paths. 2019 should be a good year as we build on this strong base.
Our slot on BBC Radio 5Live: Being thrust into the limelight with our first radio slot on BBC Radio 5Live Drive in 2018 was scary but ultimately very enjoyable. Someone suggested that it was one to cross off the bucket list, to which I replied, “are you mad – my bucket list has nice things, not stressful ones!” The next step was to appear in our first short promotional video – although not short enough in my opinion! Again, surprisingly fun in the end and there is more to come in 2019.
Achieving BACS accreditation: At the end of 2018, we went through the BACS inspection process, following a lot of hard work and effort to prepare. Not too surprisingly, but still something to be proud of, we passed the inspection and are now a BACS accredited bureau. This means we have an additional service to offer our payroll clients and even more to shout about for the payroll team.
Consolidating what we’re good at: In the tax part of our practice, that last 12 months have been a year of consolidation. We’ve not had any great changes, but we’ve worked consistently and successfully in an ever-difficult tax environment. Less racy than most, but equally as important!
Dealing with HMRC: Anyone working in the world of tax will know it’s becoming increasingly difficult to deal with HMRC, both by telephone and post! During 2018, we successfully represented several taxpayers who have received detailed HMRC enquiries. As a result, we’ve saved them from paying additional tax and also penalties – plus took away masses of stress and pressure!
Developing the tax team: I have an excellent team, and I couldn’t achieve a fraction of what I do without them! During the last year, Louisa Turner continued to develop our corporate tax offering, helping our clients to navigate some complex and significant changes relevant to companies and businesses, including tax losses and capital allowances. Harvey Preston developed our private client services, focusing on providing an excellent service to individuals and families on all matters relating to their personal tax affairs. We have also further developed our expertise in dealing with inheritance tax planning and trusts. A great year all-round!
