Employees who work full time overseas are generally treated as not resident in the UK for tax purposes.

HMRC have provided guidance if an employee is forced to return to the UK as a result of "exceptional circumstances" arising from the political unrest in the Middle East, as follows:

 - If employees were temporarily brought back to the UK near the end of the 2010/11 tax year, this will have no impact on their residence status.

- For 2011/12 where the exceptional circumstances apply for a much longer period.  Employees undertaking UK duties of more than 10 days should contact HMRC who will give specific comment on their residence position in light of the circumstances.
