Taxpayers have reported over 70,000 scam emails sent to them purporting to be from HMRC in a 6 month period.
This is a 70% increase on the same period last year.
HMRC have confirmed they are working closely with law enforcement issues to resolve the issue but wish to warn taxpayers in the meantime.
The emails promise a tax refund in return for confirmation of some personal data.
Please remember HMRC will never contact taxpayers due a refund via email.
HMRC also encourage that you forward any suspicious emails to firstname.lastname@example.org and then delete them.
