£20,000 penalty for failure to pay National Minimum Wage

£20,000 penalty for failure to pay National Minimum Wage

We mentioned earlier that the Government was planning to come down heavier on those who fail to pay the National Minimum Wage (NMW) to their workers.

Well they now mean serious business as it has been proposed that the maximum penalty should be increased from £5,000 to £20,000.

NMW should be paid to most classes of worker and employers can easily fall foul by believing this doesn’t apply to interns/apprentices or work placements.  However, HMRC look beyond titles to the actual relationship.  The instances when NMW is not required are very restrictive.

So, if you have any doubt as to whether you are applying the NMW correctly contact our payroll bureau 01484 538351.
